The first thing to do is sit down and come up with a list of ideas you could write about. Think about the publication’s target audience and what might fire up the editor. You might consider writing a sample article, but usually an outline will suffice. Your next step is to make contact. If you can arrange to meet your editor in person, or even corner him or her at an industry event, you’ll have a greater chance of success. If at first you fail, consider trying a new magazine, a new angle or simply being persistent. As with any sell, if you keep up the contact, you’re likely to succeed sooner or later. If you do succeed, read some basic books about writing for the media. Whatever you do: Never miss a deadline Keep building a stock of interesting topics or you’ll lose your column Try to put yourself in the readers’ shoes. They want news, not advertising. Media training It’s not surprising that some of the best commentators have received media training. There are experts out there offering training and mentoring and if you’re serious about lifting your media profile, then sign up for some lessons. Media trainers are many and varied. Look for someone who offers to teach you great interview techniques, media crisis management, and more. Five top No Nos: Don’t sell. You’ll set yourself apart from others and appear to be an expert in a subject, not just someone trying to sell their business. Don’t speak badly of others in the industry. Instead impress the journalist with your knowledge. Never go off the record. Only seasoned media players do this and it’s usually about a subject they’re happy to go on the record with. Don’t pester. As with relationships, desperation never works with journalists. Never ask to see the article before it goes to print. Most journalists refuse, as editors don’t like to publish censored copy. If you do ask, the likelihood is you won’t be interviewed again. var owHost = ((“https:” == document.location.protocol) ? “https://” : “http://”);document.write(unescape(“%3Cscript src='” + owHost + “onlywire.com/btn/button_3798′ ad=’no’ title=’TITLE’ tags='”business communication” communication nonverbal’ url=’URL’ class=’owbutton’ type=’text/javascript’%3E%3C/script%3E”)); Reports I have written: Also by Diana Clement is this article on becoming media savvy Your Name City, State, Country Email address What are your thoughts and comments ?
