The self-help books on the coffee table mocked me, their glossy promises of transformation now feeling as hollow as a didgeridoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">My phone buzzed. A text from Emma: \u201cMade it to dinner. Wish you were here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I snorted. \u201cYeah, right,\u201d I said to the empty room. \u201cAs if Andrew would want me there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The silence that followed was deafening. Charlotte was the last person I wanted to see right now, given her history with Andrew. But as she stepped into the room, I noticed something different about her. Gone was the flashy, confident woman I remembered. Instead, she looked&#8230; softer, somehow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI know I\u2019m probably the last person you want to see,\u201d Charlotte said, her eyes darting between us. \u201cBut I heard about what\u2019s been going on, and I&#8230; I think I might be able to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Emma crossed her arms, scepticism etched on her face. \u201cHow exactly do you think you can help?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Charlotte took a deep breath. \u201cI\u2019ve been seeing a therapist who specialises in people-pleasing and boundary issues. It\u2019s been&#8230; transformative. I thought maybe you\u2019d like her number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I couldn\u2019t help but snort. \u201cYou? In therapy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI know, right?\u201d Charlotte said, a self-deprecating smile on her face. \u201cTurns out even home-wreckers have issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Despite everything, I felt a chuckle bubble up in my chest. Emma\u2019s lips twitched too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLook,\u201d Charlotte continued, \u201cI know I\u2019m not exactly a paragon of healthy relationships. But this therapist, Dr. Sinclair, she\u2019s brilliant. She\u2019s helped me understand why I do the things I do, why I seek validation in all the wrong places. And she\u2019s teaching me how to change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Emma and I exchanged glances. The idea of getting help from Charlotte, of all people, seemed absurd. And yet&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHere,\u201d Charlotte said, holding out a business card. \u201cNo pressure. But if you want to give it a go, she\u2019s amazing. And she does couples counselling too, if that\u2019s something you\u2019re interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As Emma hesitantly took the card, I felt a spark of something I hadn\u2019t felt in a while: hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThanks, Charlotte,\u201d I said, surprised by the sincerity in my voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">She nodded, then turned to leave. At the door, she paused. \u201cFor what it\u2019s worth,\u201d she said softly, \u201cI think you two have something worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the door closed behind her, Emma and I looked at each other, the therapist\u2019s card between us like a lifeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhat do you reckon?\u201d I asked, my heart pounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Emma bit her lip, then nodded slowly. \u201cMaybe&#8230; maybe it\u2019s worth a shot?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I reached out, my fingers brushing hers as we both held the card. \u201cTogether?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTogether,\u201d Emma agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Just then, both our phones buzzed simultaneously.
