{"id":654,"date":"2021-12-03T16:20:15","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T05:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leehopkins.com\/?p=654"},"modified":"2024-01-20T01:30:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T15:00:40","slug":"nonverbal-communication-signposts-transitions-and-summaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leehopkins.com\/vi\/nonverbal-communication-signposts-transitions-and-summaries\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonverbal communication: signposts, transitions and summaries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signposts-transitions-and-summaries\">Signposts, transitions and summaries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/cU7q-j7sAIY\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In two previous articles (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150409004205\/http:\/\/leehopkins.com\/nonverbal-communication-structure01.html\">nonverbal communication structure 01<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150409004205\/http:\/\/leehopkins.com\/nonverbal-communication-structure02.html\">nonverbal communication structure 02<\/a>) I discussed how an organised pattern to your presentation is a powerful nonverbal tool to aid your audience&#8217;s comprehension and your message&#8217;s delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And much like route signs and mileage markers help the traveller, so to can you help the listener or reader of your communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Three devices you can use are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">signposts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">transitional statements, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">summaries.&nbsp;<ins><\/ins><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Let&#8217;s look at each in turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signposts\">Signposts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Signposts alert your audience to key ideas. It could be a spoken or written phrase such as &#8220;this is important&#8221;, or &#8220;the second major reason we are doing this is&#8230;&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Signposts help break up the flow of your presentation and let those members of your audience who may be experiencing an attention slip know that they need to &#8216;come back&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They also help your audience remember what needs to be &#8216;taken away&#8217; from the communication &#8212; what needs to be remembered later, perhaps actioned upon, and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transitional-statements\">Transitional Statements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Transitional statements bridge ideas, often helping to explain a previous statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It could be a statement such as &#8220;The reason we need to embrace the [previous sentence] is because&#8230;&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Transitional statements help keep the presentation flowing.
