{"id":1715,"date":"2023-05-15T00:58:34","date_gmt":"2023-05-14T15:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leehopkins.com\/?p=1715"},"modified":"2023-05-15T00:59:22","modified_gmt":"2023-05-14T15:29:22","slug":"1715-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leehopkins.com\/vi\/1715-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating Killer Content, blogpost week 05"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A question that I used to get asked a lot is \u2018what is podcasting?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally defined as an audio file that was delivered to you automatically via really simple syndication (RSS), the term \u2018podcasting\u2019 has now come to embody many different facets of audio on the web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick way of explaining them is to call them mini radio shows that you can listen to when and where you choose\u2014be that at your computer during lunch, on the commute to work or walking your dog. You don\u2019t need any sophisticated gadgetry to listen to one\u2014you can download them onto your smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content of that audio media varies considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early adopters of this new information distribution channel used it predominantly as their own music radio station; indeed, you could call podcasting radio with a rewind button. But once the costs of production (almost zero) became known to businesses and consultants it was only a matter of time before all sorts of material became available by RSS subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today you can subscribe to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>University lectures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comedy shows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music shows (focusing on each and every type of music \u2013 whatever your taste, you can find a niche specialist who equally shares your passion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>True crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women\u2019s issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industry information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything that can be recorded and distributed as a digital audio file can be podcasted (remembering that the podcast isn\u2019t the audio file itself, but how it\u2019s delivered and distributed, which is via RSS subscription).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HOW DO I CREATE A PODCAST?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple \u2013 record someone or something, edit it and then publish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Record: using a microphone (a $20 version works just as well as a $100 version for most podcasts), record an interview, yourself or someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Edit: take out the \u201cums and ahs\u201d, the fluffs, the mispronunciations, the nervous ticks (I have a dreadful habit of sucking in air through my front teeth when breathing between sentences, which I have to laboriously edit out!) and generally tighten up your recording. Software like \u2018Audacity\u2019 (free) and Adobe \u2018Audition\u2019, allow you to add \u201ccompression\u201d and change equalizer settings to make the sound a little more polished, but don\u2019t worry about those bells and whistles at first; all of that stuff can come later as you gain more experience and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add in some music (if your podcast format has music in it as introductory or outgoing \u201csignature\u201d pieces, for example) and sound effects if you want. Listen to the final output several times \u2013 you\u2019d be amazed at how the recording you listened to at 4pm and thought was rather good sounds less so at 9.30 the next morning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Publish: Host your edited audio file on a third-party\u2019s server (I personally recommend Libsyn\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.libsyn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.libsyn.com<\/a>\u2014for cost effectiveness and reliability). Once it has been hosted, make sure you let everyone in your world know about it \u2013 customers, employees, suppliers\u2014depending, of course, on who your target audience is (Hopkins).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Keep it simple: Don\u2019t be over-ambitious on your first few attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Keep it short: Aim for around 10-15 minutes at first, you can always increase the length of the podcast once you have a better idea of how much content you need to create\/curate in order to hit the bigger timings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Don\u2019t overly fret about production values and technology: A podcast that sounds like you\u2019re in a fishbowl will not work well, but equally, they don\u2019t necessarily need to sound like something produced by a professional broadcaster. Your phone is very likely good enough to capture audio, just not in a caf\u00e9 (I learned from bitter experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Look out for best practice: Always be on the lookout for new ideas and ways to improve the podcast \u2013 just as you would do with anything else. That means taking suggestions on board and listening to as many different podcasts as you have time to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Keep them coming: Don\u2019t use up all your energy on the first one and then give up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopkins, L.J. <em>Melcrum\u2019s Special Report on Podcasting<\/em>.
