Another batch of withheld royalties.<\/h2>\n<p>And another pair of non-answers from the very people indie authors are told to look up to.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Amazon\u2019s ongoing lockout<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For over a month, I\u2019ve been locked out of my Amazon account. Each time I try to log in, I\u2019m prompted for Two-Step Verification\u2014a system that Amazon\u2019s own emails insist is <em>disabled<\/em> on my account.<\/p>\n<p>The result? I can\u2019t sign in. I can\u2019t change my bank account details. It\u2019s a structural failure. And it raises a bigger question: what happens when Amazon\u2019s systems fail an author\u2014and no one steps up to help?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reaching out to industry leaders<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Independent authors are often told to lean on industry voices for guidance and advocacy. So I reached out to two of the most prominent: <strong>Jane Friedman<\/strong> and <strong>Joanna Penn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane Friedman<\/strong>\u2014a long-standing publishing commentator\u2014never replied. Silence. Two missed opportunities.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why this matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about one disgruntled author. It\u2019s about the structural reality of publishing today:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If Amazon locks you out, you lose your income.<\/li>\n<li>Withheld royalties are not just numbers on a screen\u2014they\u2019re theft dressed up as \u201ctechnical issues.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The industry leaders we are told to trust often avoid conflict with the very platform that holds our livelihoods hostage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Silence as complicity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jane\u2019s silence is an answer in itself. Joanna\u2019s polite deflection is, in many ways, worse\u2014because it acknowledges the problem while carefully sidestepping any responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Neither response is malicious. Both are strategic. But silence and safe answers tell authors a blunt truth: <strong>don\u2019t expect your industry leaders to go to bat for you when Amazon screws up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What indie publishing needs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Independent publishing was built on Amazon\u2019s infrastructure. But its future depends on accountability.<\/p>\n<p>If our most visible commentators and mentors refuse to challenge the platform, then it falls to those of us with fewer stakes and less to lose to document, expose, and demand answers.<\/p>\n<p>At 66 years old, I\u2019m not particularly worried about whether Amazon blackballs me. I\u2019ve got more books in me, more words to publish, and fewer years ahead than behind.<\/p>\n<p>What I <em>am<\/em> worried about is silence.
