But what if the trade-off is far worse than we realised? Behind the glossy interfaces, Meta has quietly built a business empire on surveillance, manipulation, and disregard for basic human rights. In this post, I\u2019ll take a clear-eyed look at the illegal and unethical ways Meta abuses our data\u2014and why growing lawsuits around the world could finally hold them accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-tertiary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-846fd8872285b972a811fd41bfde1fc5\" style=\"background-color:#006600\">Just when you thought it couldn&#8217;t any worse, here&#8217;s their latest in a long line of illegal, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/06\/12\/the-meta-ai-app-is-a-privacy-disaster\/\">silent stealing of your data<\/a><\/strong>. Even I am shocked at their audacity<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>What Meta has been caught doing with our data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Illegal stuff (proven in court or settled without admission of guilt)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1. Cambridge Analytica scandal (2018)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Facebook allowed a third-party app to harvest data from up to <strong>87 million users<\/strong> without consent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">That data was later used for <strong>political manipulation<\/strong>, including in the <strong>2016 US Presidential election<\/strong> and <strong>Brexit campaigns<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Result: Facebook paid a <strong>US$5 billion fine<\/strong> to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) \u2014 the largest ever privacy settlement at the time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Facebook <strong>admitted no wrongdoing<\/strong> officially, but the fine was for <em>violations of user privacy laws<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2. Biometric data collection without consent (Facebook Photo Tagging)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Facebook created a facial recognition system without getting clear, informed consent from users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Class-action lawsuits (especially in Illinois, USA) led to Facebook paying <strong>US$650 million<\/strong> in settlements for <em>violating biometric privacy laws<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>3. Children\u2019s data misuse (Instagram, 2022)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Meta was fined <strong>\u20ac405 million<\/strong> by Ireland\u2019s Data Protection Commission (DPC) for <em>violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Instagram allowed children\u2019s accounts (ages 13\u201317) to display personal information like phone numbers and email addresses publicly \u2014 without adequate protections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>4. Misleading investors about privacy breaches (2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Facebook was fined <strong>US$100 million<\/strong> by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The charge: They misled investors by not properly disclosing the risks around how user data was mishandled (especially relating to Cambridge Analytica).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unethical stuff (legal but seriously questionable)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1. Excessive surveillance and data harvesting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Meta collects vast amounts of <strong>off-platform data<\/strong> \u2014 tracking users <strong>even when they\u2019re not logged into Facebook<\/strong> or <strong>even if they don\u2019t have a Facebook account<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Through trackers like <strong>Facebook Pixel<\/strong>, apps, and third-party websites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><em>Users are barely aware<\/em> how much is being collected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2. Manipulation of users\u2019 emotions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">In 2012, Facebook <strong>secretly ran a psychological experiment<\/strong> on nearly <strong>700,000 users<\/strong> by manipulating their news feeds to see if exposure to positive or negative content would change their mood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">No informed consent was obtained \u2014 which would be required in any proper psychological study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>3. Addictive design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are designed to <strong>exploit psychological vulnerabilities<\/strong> \u2014 especially in teenagers \u2014 to maximise engagement (likes, endless scrolling, dopamine hits).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Former Facebook executives have admitted it was <strong>\u201cdesigned to be addictive\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>4. Spreading misinformation and extremism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Internal research at Facebook (the \u201cFacebook Papers\u201d) revealed that Meta knew its algorithms <strong>promoted extreme, divisive content<\/strong> because that content <strong>generated more engagement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">They <em>chose not to fix it<\/em> because reducing engagement would hurt profits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>5. Overcollection of WhatsApp data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Despite promising <strong>\u201cprivacy-first\u201d encryption<\/strong>, Meta uses WhatsApp metadata \u2014 who you talk to, how often, your device info \u2014 for <strong>advertising targeting<\/strong> and <strong>network building<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">They forced users in many countries (except Europe where GDPR stopped them) to <strong>accept new terms<\/strong> allowing this or lose access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>8. Lobbying against regulation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Meta spends <strong>tens of millions of dollars<\/strong> annually lobbying governments around the world to <strong>weaken privacy laws<\/strong> and <strong>shape tech regulation<\/strong> in its favour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In short<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Meta\u2019s pattern<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1. Collect as much data as possible<\/strong> \u2014 often without real consent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2. Monetise it aggressively<\/strong> \u2014 even at the expense of user well-being<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>3. Cover up, delay, or pay fines when caught<\/strong> \u2014 but don\u2019t fundamentally change their model<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>In my professional opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While they have been fined for certain illegal activities, the <em>unethical behaviour<\/em> is far broader and far more damaging to society\u2014especially to vulnerable populations like children and people with mental health struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major lawsuits and investigations still pending against Meta (as of 2025)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1.
