Meta (formerly Facebook Inc.) acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for approximately US$19 billion, making it one of the largest tech acquisitions in history. Since then, WhatsApp has been integrated more deeply into Meta&#8217;s ecosystem alongside Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Meta harvest your data via WhatsApp?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes\u2014but with caveats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WhatsApp encrypts your messages end-to-end, which means Meta cannot read the content of your messages, calls, photos, or videos. While WhatsApp&#8217;s encryption offers some protection, the metadata can still be leveraged. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Cross-platform tracking<\/strong> Meta creates &#8220;shadow profiles&#8221; across its platforms to serve personalised content and ads\u2014even if you&#8217;re not logged in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Future monetisation risks<\/strong> WhatsApp may eventually integrate ads, e-commerce, or AI-driven services that erode privacy further.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do to minimise these risks?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Limit permissions:<\/strong> Don\u2019t share contacts, location, or unnecessary access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Avoid linking accounts:<\/strong> Keep WhatsApp separate from Facebook and Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Use alternatives:<\/strong> Consider Signal or Telegram\u2014Signal, in particular, has better privacy protections and is open source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check your privacy settings: <\/strong>Go to Settings &gt; Privacy in WhatsApp and limit who can see your profile photo, last seen, and status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turn off cloud backups: <\/strong>Cloud backups (e.g. Google Drive or iCloud) of messages are not encrypted, and therefore accessible to third parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary: Who&#8217;s Best for Privacy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tb4\/2\/16\/2705.png\" alt=\"\u2705\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 16px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 16\/16;\"> Signal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2192 Best-in-class privacy and encryption.
