7 Tips for Building Quality Backlinks

Backlinks serve a dual purpose for website owners who need more traffic. All of the top search engines, including Google and Bing, use backlinks as indicators of a site's worth. A site that has a lot of backlinks from other reputable sources is ranked higher in search results. Backlinks also help visitors find you organically. When a popular blog or website links to your site you can expect a flood of new visitors. Building backlinks the right way allows you to maximize their effectiveness without spending hours sending requests to website owners or resorting to black hat tactics.

1. Guest Posts
Some of the biggest and most popular websites on the Internet are blogs full of content about a specific topic. Find a big blog that writes about topics related to your website and check if they accept guest posts. Writing an engaging and interesting post gives the blog free content and gives you a great backlink to your website. 

2. Niche Sites
If you have the time, building very small niche sites is a great way to create backlinks that are completely under your control. Set up single page sites with a few helpful articles that point readers to your website for more information. There are dozens of free services that make this process as easy as entering your text and pressing a button, including Squidoo and Blogger. Niche sites can also be targeted for one main keyword, giving you an extra boost in the search engine rankings.

3. Link Out
Linking to other websites and blogs is the best way to encourage others to offer you backlinks. If you think that no one will notice, try emailing the website owner and letting them know that you've set up a link. Don't be pushy or get mad if they don't reciprocate. Websites with no outgoing links can take a hit to their reputation, so high quality outgoing links should be a part of your strategy.

4. Create Press Releases
A press release is designed to share the latest news about your business with the world. You can include a few good backlinks without being penalized and you can submit this press release to some very high traffic media outlets. News websites looking for content often aggregate these press releases sources, increasing your chances to be seen by thousands of new visitors.

5. Make Something Worth Sharing
A single funny image or controversial article can bring in thousands of organic and spontaneous backlinks. Create some content that goes viral and your reputation with skyrocket. Putting some effort into the content can be far more rewarding than hours spent sending backlinks to the same old directories.

6. Build Links Naturally
It may be tempting to hire an SEO professional who claims to be able to secure 5,000 backlinks for you in less than a month, but there is a major downside to that kind of growth. The search engine algorithms are designed to disregard unusually rapid growth. Build your links naturally and combine them with other tactics to see real results and avoid penalties from the search engines.

7. Stay Relevant
10 backlinks from highly rated websites that are related to your website's topic in some way are worth 1000 links from unrelated sources.

Backlinks can give your website a lot of visibility but are easy to abuse. Stick to the realistic methods of link building outlined above if you are serious about improving your search engine positions. Being ranked down by a search engine can be difficult to undo. Just keep working towards your goals and you will begin to see results.
